HOW IT WORKS
The state of North Carolina requires anyone under 18 to complete a driver education course with at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 6 hours of behind‑the‑wheel instruction. To register for a class, you must be at least 14 years and 6 months old by the first day of class.
During the school year, you must register for driver education at the school you attend. During the summer, you may take the class at any school within the county where you attend school. You may not cross into another county to take driver education at any time.
Your first step is to check our class schedule to see upcoming sessions and sign up. If your school does not use our website for online registration, you must contact the school directly to register. Class length varies by school, but most sessions run for eleven school days, three hours per day, and typically do not meet on Fridays. During the summer, there are no excused absences; you must attend every class session to receive credit.
After you complete the classroom phase, students in each class are placed in order by date of birth, from oldest to youngest, and will drive in that order. You should receive a call within 90–120 days to begin the driving portion (this time frame is mostly due to a shortage of instructors). Instructors will do their best to work with your schedule. Most driving sessions are held in the afternoons, evenings, and on Saturdays; some instructors also drive in the mornings before school.
Behind‑the‑wheel instruction is not one‑on‑one. There will be two or three students in the vehicle at all times. Students are picked up and dismissed from the school campus, and parents are responsible for transportation to and from driver education. It usually takes three to four days to complete the driving phase. On the last day, the instructor will issue a completion certificate. This certificate does not expire.
Next, you must obtain a driver eligibility certificate from your high school, which confirms that you meet the adequate progress law. This eligibility certificate expires 30 days from the date it is issued. Once you have your completion certificate, driver eligibility certificate, birth certificate, and Social Security card, you may visit the DMV to apply for your permit.
